WIND THE BIG CON!

Perry White City Editor of the Watertown Daily Times:

“It was a good deal for some, but for the people it was the Big Con.”

As it turns out, the wind-power shell game has nabbed its first municipal victim, in a big way.

We will have to wait until January 1, 2016 to see if the Madison wind farm operator walks away from the project, but from White's information it seems likely that is exactly what will happen. The bigger story involves the state's wind industry as a whole. Will this be the norm for all the wind farms currently operating with PILOT agreements throughout the state? Will they all walk away when their PILOTs expire? If it is, then it becomes a multi-million dollar con with local jurisdictions, not the state, holding the bag. I think any community that is currently in the initial stages of planning for a wind farm should call for a freeze/moratorium on the process until they can see how the wind industry honors these PILOT agreements. Given the Madison wind farm operator's opposition to paying the full share of taxes outlined in their PILOT agreement, only a fool would approve a wind PILOT for any new development at this time. Fools shouldn't rush in, not now.
